PRP for Hair Restoration

PRP for Hair Restoration

Hair loss that occurs with aging is understandably frustrating to treat. Surgical hair transplantation is a permanent but rather expensive solution with significant downtime. Pills, laser caps, and topical medications may give some mild improvement. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections is a newer, promising treatment with no downtime or concerning side effects and noticeable improvement for most patients.

PRP is a natural, safe treatment that involves drawing the patient's own blood, then spinning it down in a centrifuge to collect only the platelet-rich plasma ("liquid gold"). This portion of the blood contains many different growth factors that stimulate the hair to regenerate and regrow.  The PRP is injected back into the treatment area in a quick, easy process with little discomfort and no downtime.

Results may vary among individuals, although patients with more recent hair loss (less than 3 years)  respond the best.  PRP is not the best option for patients with extensive balding for several decades. Otherwise, it is impossible to predict who will get remarkable regrowth of hair, and who will get only some stabilization of hair loss.

Overall, the first response you will see in 4-12 weeks is improved hair retention, which is less hair falling out.  Please note that it typically takes up to 6 months for actual hair growth to begin.  The average patient may see a 30% increase in the number of hairs on the head and a 60% increase in the size of each hair. The growth factors in PRP basically turn the fine, small hairs into thicker, more robust hairs. This is not a cure for baldness and must be continued on a maintenance basis to stimulate the hair growth.

PRP is typically given in a series of injections, once a month for 3-4 months to begin the process. Patients then repeat PRP every 4-6 months for maintenance and even more improvement. If you stop the maintenance treatment, then the hair will slowly return to its original state.

PRP does not work for every type of hair loss.  It is important to have a medical evaluation by Dr. Brown for clearance before your treatments.  We do not want to waste your time and money with this procedure if you have a type of hair loss that will not respond.
