The Illuminate Advanced Peel System is the most effective and rapid treatment we’ve ever seen for pigmented blotches and discoloration on the face. This procedure is a superficial peel with the addition of high potency hydroquinone and retinoic acid. This specific combination targets the pigment cells in melasma, pregnancy mask, sunspots, freckles, and dark blemishes. And, best of all, it is safe to use in patients with any skin type or color. For dark-skinned patients, there are significant limitations and higher risks with conventional peels and laser treatments. The Illuminate Advanced Peel System is a breakthrough for these patients, as it works optimally on their skin.
How does the Illuminate Peel work?
After thorough cleansing and degreasing of the skin, a vitamin A peel is applied to the skin. This is then covered with a creamy mask which contains high potency bleaching products. The patient leaves the office with this facial mask in place for several hours. We recommend wearing your hair pulled back for the peel to avoid getting product in it. Also, you should plan on going directly home after the peel. The procedure continues at home, with a month-long regimen of specific products included in the kit. The success of this peel is dependent on consistent aftercare with the products provided. However, the most important factor is strict sun protection. The fresh, new skin after the peel may easily darken again if it is exposed to even small amounts of sun. We will discuss multiple methods for sun protection at the time of the appointment.
How many treatments will I need?
Only one treatment is typically needed, but the procedure can be repeated four to six months later, if necessary.
Does it hurt?
No discomfort is experienced at all during the procedure. However, during the peeling process afterwards, your skin may feel sensitive.
What will I experience with the peel?
After removal of the mask at night, your skin may have a light yellow tinge. This is temporary and will fade in a few hours. The skin will be more red than usual for the next seven days. Peeling of the skin typically begins about 48 hours after the mask is removed, and will last for 2-5 days.
What results can I expect?
Most patients see a significant improvement in the appearance of the discolored patches. The dark spots should lighten, and skin texture and tone is improved. Most, but not all patients experience peeling of the skin. Even without the peeling, you are still receiving the benefits of the procedure, which include collagen stimulation, diminished pigmentation, and improved skin tone and texture. As with all procedures, results may vary.
Who should not receive an Illuminate Peel?
The following patients should avoid treatment:
- If you have active cold sores, warts, open wounds, sunburn, dermatitis, or inflamed skin disease in the area to be treated. Inform Dr. Brown before your peel if you have a history of cold sores or herpes simplex.
- If you have a history of skin reactions or extremely sensitive skin on the face
- If you have taken Accutane or isotretinoin within the last year
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding
- If you received chemotherapy or radiation therapy in the last year
- If your face will have to be exposed to the sun in the next several months
